Was Iran behind the RAF Fairford plot

British police release five suspects on bail while probing possible Iran-linked plot to attack US bomber base at RAF Fairford.

British counter-terror cops are hunting for a foreign state's fingerprints after five men were caught near a US bomber base in Gloucestershire. The suspects, all British nationals in their early 20s from London, were arrested Sunday morning after a farmer spotted three white vans heading toward RAF Fairford, home to American B-1 bombers that have flown missions against Iran.

They're now out on stringent bail while detectives chase multiple leads, including whether the men were acting as proxies for a hostile government.

Was Iran behind the RAF Fairford plot?

Laurence Taylor, head of Britain's counter-terrorism police, stopped short of naming any country but made it clear investigators are weighing the geopolitical angle.

"Be assured, we are considering this from every possible angle, including that this may be actively committed by proxies or individuals either knowingly or unknowingly working on behalf of a foreign state," Taylor told reporters outside London police headquarters.

A source familiar with the probe told Reuters an Iranian-linked motive is seen as the most likely scenario, though Russian sabotage and an Islamist plot remain on the table.

Iran's embassy in London fired back, calling the speculation "unfounded and malicious" and warning it would fuel "Iranophobia propaganda" in Britain.

What did President Trump say about the suspects?

Donald Trump weighed in from the White House, suggesting a possible Iranian connection and blasting the decision to release the men on bail.

"I wouldn't have done that," Trump said of the bail move, adding the incident "might be" connected to Iran.

The US Embassy promptly issued a security alert, urging American citizens to stay vigilant and step up personal security measures across the UK.

How did a farmer help foil the attack?

The drama unfolded when a local farmer dialled 999 after spotting "hooded and masked men" sprinting into fields near the base.

She believed she saw as many as 10 people at the scene and credits her call with stopping the plot in its tracks.

Police imposed a 400-metre cordon around RAF Fairford and evacuated 85 homes in the nearby village of Whelford while bomb disposal experts swept the area.

"Thanks to the excellent work of the army's explosive ordnance disposal team, the scene is now safe, and the residents of Whelford will shortly be returning home," Interior Minister Shabana Mahmood said.

What's next for the investigation?

Taylor stressed the probe is far from over despite the bail releases.

"To be very clear, this does not mean that the investigation is over," he said. "They absolutely remain under investigation as we explore multiple lines of enquiry."

Britain's terror threat level sits at its second-highest tier after a string of antisemitic attacks in north London that police have linked to Iranian proxies.

Defense Minister Wes Streeting told the BBC that Iran and its agents "wish to do us harm" and regularly try to threaten British interests and allies.
